Physical Retail in the Digital Age: Why are indie record shops still in business?

In the digital age the retail landscape is in flux and there is a growing perception that shopping on the high street is more expensive and time-consuming than shopping online. In the music marketplace illegal downloading and streaming have put thousands of record shops out of business but some remain attractive consumption spaces. But why is this the case? Using evidence from shops in Stockholm, this session outlines three strategies – cultivating in-store consumer experiences, creating value through curation and tapping into global markets by going online - that help some local shops remain resilient in the age of digital distribution and on-demand consumption.
